Don’t Believe Everything You Think
June 2021 – Don’t Believe Everything You Think
“Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.”-Roy T. Bennett
It takes super human powers to not give in to the fears in our mind. I find it helpful to laser focus on the current moment. What can you do right now that will help you inch closer to the dreams in your heart? Rome wasn’t built in a day, your clutter (usually) didn’t happen overnight, so what small step toward order can you do today?
I think I can, I think I can…
Who remembers the book, The Little Engine that Could? I loved that book and I’m guessing it had to do with the power of positive thinking. Who would ever think that a tiny little engine could get up that gigantic mountain?
And isn’t confronting the accumulation of clutter in your home a similar feeling? Um. Yes!
This is where the “Don’t believe everything you think” comes in.
It’s second nature to feel defeated and hopeless when the work before you is daunting and overwhelming. And that’s when many people quit. There’s also a middle ground where you don’t have to quit – you can turn off the negative chatter and replace it with positive thoughts and affirmations.
For example:When your mind says – “I am never going to get rid of all this stuff,” your ‘higher self’ can change the thought to “What’s an easy thing I can do right now for 5 minutes?”
When your mind says – “My back hurts and I can’t do this myself,” your ‘higher self’ can change the thought to “I can sort through a pile of junk mail for 5 minutes that won’t kill my back.”
When your mind says – “It will take forever to get this house in order,” your ‘higher self’ can say “Oh, wait – there’s Cindy’s Declutter Challenge Club and for literally pennies a day, I can have a group of like-minded people commiserate with me and we help each other to make progress.”
When you catch yourself being negative, see if you can re-frame the thought to transform yourself into the Little Engine that Could – and DID!
