July 2021 – Parting (with your stuff) is such sweet sorrow…

“Letting go is hard, but sometimes holding on is harder.”-Unknown

For many people, letting go is not a natural response. But by not letting go, we can make life harder for ourselves. Whether it’s holding on to unsatisfactory relationships, jobs or a pile of dusty/crusty memorabilia, it rocks the boat to change the way we naturally respond but it can also lead us to greater heights. Try this – let go of ONE THING and see how well you can tolerate it. Just ONE THING. If it doesn’t hurt, then you can find one more thing for tomorrow. And so on and so on. If it does hurt, then try a different item that you don’t have such a strong attachment to…like address labels or twist ties. Practice makes permanent.

Letting go is hard

Parting (with your stuff) can be sweet!

Letting go is hard to do

When Juliet said to Romeo that “Parting is such sweet sorrow,” she was sad to say goodbye but she was also excited by the idea of seeing him again. Let’s consider this perspective as you part with the possessions you no longer use/need/remember.

For example, parting with old newspaper clippings of world events that have no monetary value and can be looked up on line….parting with those could be very sweet when you think of less paper, less piles and less chance of little buggers feasting on your paper products.

And another example…parting with costume jewelry that was handed to you from relatives or even your own that you would never dream of wearing now – how sweet would it be to get some money for that plus more space for the items you do currently use/wear/love.

Last example for now….parting with old computers, cell phones, printers that are broken will free up your floors, counters, storage areas and give you space for items that DO work!
Pretend you’re Juliet and focus on the positives of parting with your stuff – you may not see it again, but the sweetness of more space and less to worry about will give you the sweetest gift of all — freedom from the bondage of your stuff.
