Spring decluttering around the house
Here are some things found in most homes that can be unloaded. Once you get rid of the clutter, you’ll feel better, have a sense of accomplishment and open up some of your living space.
Kitchen
- Expired food
- Expired condiments and spices – yes, they expire!
- Canned food expires too
- Old stuff in the freezer – do you even know what’s in there?
- Plastic containers that are damaged or missing lids – this can free up lots of space
- Extra Ice Cube trays
- Small appliances that seemed great when you bought them, but are never used – bread maker, juicer, etc.
- Chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged plates and cups – they can harbor bacteria once they are damaged
- Carry out menus that have duplicates – most restaurants have online menus you can easily access
- Utensils that are broken, damaged or have duplicates – damaged utensils can be hazardous to use
- Cookbooks you never use – It’s easy to get recipes online. Take pictures or scan your favorites, file them in a recipe folder on your computer and then get rid of the books.
- Beer coozies and water bottles that everyone gives away – keep a few, but how many do you need?
- Nearly empty bottles of cleaning supplies that you never use – this stuff gets old and crusty after a while
- Overabundance of refrigerator magnets
Bathroom
- Towels and washcloths that have seen better days – animal rescue groups always need towels
- Expired over the counter medications – some may still work, but can lose their effectiveness
- Expired makeup or sunscreen – you can end up with skin damage
- Old nail polish – if it’s dried up, you can’t use it anyway
- Excess cleaning supplies – just taking up space
- Tiny soap slivers that will never be used – saving them up to make into one big bar is not worth the trouble
- Air fresheners that no longer work – not helping you to keep them
- Old toothbrush – you should get a new toothbrush every few months
- Hair accessories that are stretched out or broken – not effective if they’re damaged
- Bath puffs, loofahs or other bath supplies that are too old to be useful
- Hair care products (shampoo, conditioner, mousse, gel, hairspray, etc.) that were purchased, rarely used and are old
This is a good start. Next time we’ll talk about other places in your home where you can declutter and give yourself some breathing room.
