your linen closet makeover

Give your linen closet a makeover

We use things out of the linen closet daily, so it is important to have this closet well organized. Finding what you need without digging around, is critical.

Purge what you don’t need

How many sets of sheets do you need? For each bed, two to three sets of sheets should be enough. Get rid of anything torn, stained or fitting a bed you no longer have.

And what about towels? Same thing, keep a few sets of towels for each member of the house. They don’t have to have their own special towels, but if you have three people living in the house 6-9 towels should be enough.

Adjustable shelves and/or bins can help

Adjustable shelves are great when you have small things that don’t take up a lot of space or for blankets or other bulky items that need a deeper shelf. Smaller items like washcloths or pillowcases fit nicely into bins that will help keep them together without the stack falling over.

Putting contact paper or painting the shelves can give the linen closet a nice appearance. It is not necessary as long as the shelves are clean, but it can add some pizzazz and give the linen closet a bright, new look.

Avoid putting items on the floor. Instead use baskets or bins so everything stays neat and clean.

Put like things together your linen closet

You can put all of the big towels together, the hand towels together and the washcloths together. It can get complicated if you want to shelve sets of towels together because some people like a towel for their body and another one for their hair. In that case, the individual would need two larger towels, a hand towel and a washcloth.

A nice way to store sheets is to use one of the pillowcases to house the rest of the set. If that doesn’t work for you, try putting fitted sheets, flat sheets and pillowcases in their own stacks or bins. It really doesn’t matter what method you use to organize everything as long as you keep it up over the long haul.

Tablecloths and cloth napkins can be stored together as well. They can have their own space in the closet.

Extra toilet paper rolls and tissue boxes can be stored together too. If you have space for bath supplies and soaps, they can go into bins.

Keep everything fresh

One way to keep things smelling fresh and clean is to use potpourri or a sachet work well. Another way to do that, especially if you have soap that has a strong scent, is to keep the soap in the linen closet. A dryer sheet tacked up to the wall is another way to keep everything smelling great.

The most important steps are getting started and continuing once you are organized. If you need help with clutter or feel overwhelmed, please contact me. We can come up with a plan to get your entire home organized.
