Decluttering with Care
September 2021 – Decluttering with Care
What I know for sure is that when you declutter – whether it’s on your home, your head, or your heart – it is astounding what will flow into that space that will enrich you, your life, and your family.-Peter Walsh fromLose the Clutter, Lose the Weight
Decluttering with Care
Decluttering is a dicey subject because I often run into people who are extremely concerned with WHERE the items go once they’ve made the difficult decision to part with their possessions.
I recently came across a wonderful article that details the options we have to get rid of our items with sustainability in mind. I caution everyone to not let sustainability goals interfere with your overall goal to declutter. Sustainability can sometimes take longer (which is not helpful for those who have mega quantities of clutter) but it is also extremely satisfying and rewarding to know that your items are going to wonderful new homes. Click here if you want to read the article in its entirety, but here are the highlights of WHERE to give your items so that they do not end up in a landfill.
- Try Buy Nothing Groups – these are groups that already exist on Facebook and you can post your items and you will be amazed at how quickly people will offer to pick them up for free. Each time I have done this myself, it has gotten results. The author of the article claims it works for anything from vitamins to romaine lettuce. I’ve used it for firewood most recently.
- Donate with Care – ask before you take a bunch of donations to a non profit – make sure they will be appreciated because many of these drop off places spend a lot of money disposing of things that aren’t good enough to re-sell. As the author says, “If it didn’t work for you, it’s not going to work for them.”
- Opt for repair or creative reuse – Old socks and t-shirts can become doggie toys, parts of a broken item can be repurposed. Warning -this option does causes me concern because often times it rewards the over-saver/keeper to hold on to more quantity than there may be room for in the home – but the idea is a nice one!
- Find a specialized recycling program – the article lists many great resources so it’s worth the time to check and see if there’s anything near you. I love our local Metal Recycling place – it’s even better than the dump because you make some money!
- Shop consciously – Try consignment stores and think before you buy so you can limit purchases. There are even tools and appliance loan apps to help you not buy one time use items.
Hope this helps you in your quest to declutter and organize and happy decluttering!!
