It all starts with small steps (or stones) and that’s where motivation can be ignited. Take 5 minutes right now and move a few items into a giveaway or trash bag and see how you feel. Odds are that you’ll feel proud of yourself for getting results in just 5 minutes. Go for it!

The Magic of Moving

Many people contact me because they are either thinking about moving or are definitely moving. When people have to pay a moving company to transfer their belongings to a new location, they are sometimes more motivated to let go of the tough stuff. In our day to day lives, we don’t normally make those difficult decisions. And, it is for that reason, that I invite you to play the game, Let’s Pretend You’re Moving. This will give you a feel for how you can psych yourself into rightsizing your home while you’re still there and to better enjoy your living space.

Here are some guidelines for “Let’s Pretend You’re Moving”

If you already have boxes sitting in your home from a previous move that have never been unpacked, take a peek and see if you can finally let them go. Chances are there may be mold or disintegration going on which will make parting that much easier.
If you have textbooks or spiral notebooks from your school years, it might be time to let them go. When’s the last time you referenced them?
If you have old printers, computers or phones, take them to Staples or a recycling center or the dump – what purpose are they serving now? If you need them wiped, ask Staples or google “wiping your computer or phone” and see what resources appear.
If you have a ton of mismatched plastic containers and missing lids, take 30 minutes to play Match Game and let go of any odd ones or cracked/broken ones.
Peek into some closets and see what old, dusty clothes and coats no longer fit. Donate them this weekend.

Pick one and see how it feels. Referring back to what Confucius says, any one of these guidelines can be your ‘small stones’ and before you know it, your home will be rightsized!
