Free Time = Organizing Time?

“Free time is death to the anxious, and thank goodness I don’t have any of it right now.”

-Jon Stewart

Just thinking about this extra day, February 29th, and how it can be best celebrated. Would you, could you consider it as “Free Time?”

Many of us yearn for ‘free time’ and many of us feel like that is an impossible feat. Clutter and disorganization can rob us of free time and that is not fun!

Here are few quick tips to manage your own expectations of how you can make time for Organizing:

Remember that small doses of organizing and decluttering can go a long way. Commit to 15 minutes for one day and see how it feels. Guessing you’ll have energy left to do it again soon and not feel burned out or frustrated. Remember – always start with the easy stuff first.

Sign up for a donation pick up or locate a donation drop off point BEFORE you get started. It is super helpful to identify who gets your stuff when you make the cut. If you need ideas, you can use Google to search opportunities in your area. There really is a limitless supply of people and places in need.

Every time you do your 15 minutes, treat yourself to 15 minutes (at least) of something you genuinely enjoy. It could be a walk, a home movie or old photo albums, a bath, a phone call, a nap, garden…and please note I didn’t mention any activities that introduce more stuff into your home.

When you feel stuck or frustrated, pivot to something easier – for example, mounds of address labels, pen and pencil holders, sock drawer, belts, rusty or damaged kitchen tools.

When it feels too overwhelming, think of ONE thing you can do – the next step – and don’t overthink beyond that.

Easy does it wins the declutter game and I hope you will continue to play.

Happy Decluttering to all!
