Repurposing containers for storage

Repurposing containers for storage can save you money when organizing. I am not suggesting you collect or save any items, as this would add to the clutter in your home. What I hope is that you will find a way to use some containers as they become available to help you organize. Or you can use containers you already have around your home in a different way than you used them in the past.

Baby food jars, margarine tubs and other food containers can hold nails and screws. Remember to label everything, especially if the container is opaque. Ice cream or sherbet containers that are plastic work well for larger hardware items.

Parmesan cheese containers are great because they also have a lid that flips open. These are nice for things you pour like powdered sugar. A lot of powdered sugar comes in a plastic bag, making it hard to keep sealed.

Egg cartons can be repurposed for a variety of storage uses. Anything that is small can be stored in them. Little Christmas bulbs and jewelry are good examples. The flat top part of the egg carton can also be used as a drawer divider. Office supplies like pushpins and paper clips fit nicely into the little sections.

Do you have extra ice cube trays in a cabinet somewhere? Ice cube trays can be used for small items too. Earrings and rings fit nicely in them. You can also freeze things like individual blocks of herb infused butter or olive oil in them.

Plastic cups with logos on them seem to accumulate around the house. Those cups can be reused as pencil holders, for paintbrushes or scissors. They can also work to hold beauty supplies like nail files and makeup brushes. Jars are another option for these items.

Toilet paper and paper towel tubes can be used to store excess cords. You can even cover them with contact paper, wrapping paper or decorative duct tape to make them look nicer. Use what you already have on hand.

Cut a half gallon plastic milk jug with lid into a scoop for dog food. You can put the amount of food your dog gets per feeding into the scoop and then mark the container so it’s easy to measure. That same milk jug without the lid and turned upside down can become a funnel.

Do you save plastic bags to use as little trash can liners or pooper scoopers? Plastic bags do not need to take up space in an important area like on top of a counter or in a cabinet. Store them in an empty tissue box or empty disinfectant wipes container. If you use them for the dog, keep the container near your leash so you can grab a bag when you are heading out. If you use them for trash can liners, keep them under the bathroom sink so they are handy when you need them there.

Repurposing containers for storage is something that is easy to do. There are always containers in your recycling or around the house that can be made into useful things you then won’t have to purchase. Let me again stress the fact that you do not need to save these items, they are things that are readily available and don’t need to take up storage space.
