Are You an Information Junkie?
March 2022 – Are You an Information Junkie?
“When information overload strikes again, I reach for a mantra: Knowledge is power. Applied knowledge is powerful.” ― Vindy Teja
Applied knowledge – that’s worth striving for! Read ahead to learn how to reduce information overload.
Are you an Information Junkie?
I have used the term “Information Junkie” for years as I meet Information Junkies often in my work. I love information junkies – I findit fascinating how attracted they are to the latest and greatest developments in all areas. The thought of not reading an article is intolerable to information junkies. They may not get to the article, but they are physically propelled to save articles of interest because they WANT to read it. They WANT to take a deep dive into learning something new. Is it any wonder that these folks have paper issues? I think not!
The definition of an Information Junkie is someone who spends a lot of time reading, watching and listening to informative content but uses very little of their time to put into practice what they learn. Ouch!
Is there something you can do to reduce the pull of information? Consider these suggestions:
- Rather than save a whole magazine, just tear out the one or two articles that really appeal to you.
- Stop printing out emails – read it on line, take a note or two to store in your phone or in a “helpful hints” or “random information” file and move on.
- When you read something new, pause and see how you can apply one thing you’ve just read. Pause is the key word here. Learn to act rather than just save the material that may quickly get buried by newer information.
- Peruse your book collection and see if you are ‘over’ certain topics that you once were ravenous to learn about. See if you can donate one of more for starters.
- Go to your thickest files and see if you can trim some of the unnecessary information. You really don’t have to save every piece of paper you’ve ever received. You will not be arrested for recycling or shredding old papers.
- Recipe collectors have a really tough time rejecting new recipes but practice getting rid of a magazine recipe every time you clip a new one. For extra credit, you can get rid of 2 old ones for every new one. We’re baby stepping our way to less paper!
Think twice before you reach for more information – could your time be spent on completing something that needs your attention verses distracting yourself by another tangent? No right or wrong here – just offering options for bringing greater peace to your world.
