Can’t take diamonds, can’t take gold….

“Love is the only possession which we can carry with us beyond the grave.” — Suzanne Curchod
I love the timing of music — I remember when I first met my husband, every love song spoke to me. And now, I find that a song called “Grave” spoke to me. Read more ahead…

Please don’t think I’m morbid. I just get a kick out of the variety of messages in music. A country song that starts with “Can’t take diamonds, can’t take gold, but I’ll take your love with me when I go….I may be 6 feet deep but I’ll still be loving you” is pretty startling when one is finished up a day of work in my field! But who knew it would become the topic for our May issue. 🙂
Parting with possessions – it comes up every.single.day. Someone comments that ‘nobody wants all their stuff’ OR ‘my children are calling 1-800-GOT-JUNK when I die’ OR ‘I don’t have room to put anything’ and on and on and on. Sound familiar?
Perhaps if we consider “What will really matter when I’m no longer around?” – OR “What would my family really appreciate when I’m no longer around?,” this could potentially help you to lessen the hold on items that don’t have enough meaning to stick around until the end of time.
Some ideal candidates to consider are:
- Magazines – you may never get around to reading back issues. Time to surrender.
- Newspapers – saving newspapers from historical moments are not needed anymore, thanks for the internet
- Coupons – if they don’t make it to the store, why bother?
- Expired insurance policies – no reason to keep expired auto or home policies
- Old brochures – investment brochures, outdated event brochures – bye, bye!
- Hundreds of old cards – quite a few may have lost their meaning (just yesterday a client was reading her old camp letters and didn’t remember who some of the people were).
- Random paperwork from deceased family members that have no importance now
The message today is to keep what matters and let go of what doesn’t. If you think ‘everything matters’ then we may need to have a chat.
