Back-to-school organizing
Summer is coming to a close. It’s almost that time when the kids go back to the classroom. Some will go back virtually, some in person, but school will start either way. Here are some back-to-school organizing ideas that will help keep everything in order.
Get supplies
You probably received a list of supplies that your child will need. Don’t wait until the last minute. Get them as soon as possible to make sure you can find everything on the list before school starts.
Routine
Now is the time to get kids into a routine, so it’s not so jarring when school begins. Going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day will help them get into school mode.
Drop zone
A drop zone for backpacks comes in handy. Make sure the kids drop everything in the designated spot when they come in the door.
Set up the drop zone somewhere close to the front door. Kids, and adults too, tend to dump things right as they get inside the house.
Homework zone
Set up a homework zone that is in a quiet corner where your child can concentrate without being disturbed. It could be in their room, but it’s best to have a spot where there are few distractions.
Over-the-door shoe holders are used for all sorts of things. One of these can store small school and art supplies in the pockets meant for shoes. They can hang on the back of a door for easy access.
Another item that can come in handy is an Amazon Echo, Amazon Dot or Apple HomePod. These devices have an AI assistant (Alexa or Siri) to help field questions about history or science, set timers or reminders and play music during study breaks.
Another handy supply is a dry erase board, bulletin board or blackboard that can be used for notes or reminders. There is blackboard spray paint you can use to cover a section of the wall or the side of a cabinet if you don’t have room to hang a blackboard.
Sports gear
If your kids are also athletes, it’s time to get out the gear and see what fits and what needs to be replaced. What sports are being dropped and which ones are being added this school year? There might be tryouts that have to be added to the family schedule too.
Gym clothes may also need to be updated. Have your kids try on their athletic shoes to make sure they are in good shape and still fit.
Food prep
The beginning of the school year is a great time to get into a meal planning routine. On the weekend, figure out what you want to make for dinners and school lunches for the week. Get your food in one trip or online order, then prepare the food for the week. You can store the food in reusable zip lock bags or other containers that work for you. https://aim4order.com/blog/meal-planning-to-save-time-and-money/
