“Remember: you are not what you own. Storing all those books doesn’t make you any smarter; it just makes your life more cluttered .”-Francine Jay, Author
And I suppose the same could be said about having a lot of items packed away in boxes or shoved in closets….if they aren’t being enjoyed, are they worthy of the space they are taking up?
But I might Need This
How many times have you uttered the words, “But I might need this?” and then shove the item right back where it was? I know it’s happened to me!
Last week, I found (again) this nifty little gadget that is supposed to ‘shave’ off balling on wool sweaters and I have had it for YEARS because ‘you never know when it might come in handy.’ Well – forget the fact that I hate wearing wool and that I don’t have any sweaters that have ‘balling’ – but I finally had a use for it (we were eBaying a purse that had some slight wisps of material sticking up and I thought “FINALLY, I can use that gadget!” ALL THE YEARS I SAVED IT – finally it was coming in handy – and best part of all was that I actually knew where it was! Imagine my sad face when I went to put in new batteries (the batteries in there were corroded – I told you it was very old) and THE GADGET DIDN’T WORK AT ALL!!! All the years I saved it and it was for nothing.
Of course this brings to mind the question – WHAT ELSE AM I/WE KEEPING THAT IS PROBABLY PAST ITS PRIME AND COULD GO NOW? The list is endless. Spend a minute or two looking for 1-2 objects that you will likely never need and see if you can tolerate letting it go. It is said that we only use 20% of the things we think we need. Be bold, be brave and happy decluttering!
