Strive for comfort, not perfection
Strive for comfort
Being organized is not the same as being perfect. The goal is not perfection. You want to get your home to a place where clutter is no longer a problem. This will allow you to find what you need and feel more comfortable in your home.
Little things can be time savers like always leaving your keys in the same spot when you come in the house. A key rack, that is used every time you come in the door, can be huge. It takes a couple weeks to get in the habit, but one you get used to putting your keys in that spot you will never lose them again. No more searching. You’ll save time when you leave because you will know exactly where your keys are.
Being organized doesn’t mean you have to straighten up constantly. Do your organizing (and other important tasks) at the time of day when you are at your best. Are you a morning person? If you are, that is the best time to do your organizing. Are you a night owl? Organize in the evenings.
I talk about lists a lot, but they can be crucial to getting things done. Make a reasonable and realistic to do list and cross off each job as you accomplish it. You’ll see your progress when you look at the list. Seeing that list with lines through your finished tasks releases endorphins (mood boosting chemicals in the brain).
What do organized people do?
Organized people do little things every day so they don’t pile up and become big things. Put your clothes away as soon as they come out of the dryer. When you finish reading a magazine, toss it in the recycling.
And on a related note – do it now. Put dishes in the dishwasher right after you eat. Put unnecessary papers into the recycling when you bring the mail in the house. Open mail standing next to the recycle bin. When you wait, it adds to clutter.
Take time to unwind at the end of the day. Make sure you have a little time to relax and get a good night’s sleep. Being rested will help you get things done tomorrow. Remember to strive for comfort and not for perfection.
