Wishful Thinking verses Clutter
Quote of the Month
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
-Albert Einstein, Physicist
This quote resonates with all of us who struggle with clutter build up. Our intentions are honorable and sincere when we introduce new items into our homes…..but often times, these new items end up adding to our messes. Same thing goes when we sincerely think we’ll ‘go through’ piles when we get home in the evenings or on the weekends. We can challenge our old ways of thinking and learn new approaches to help solve our unwanted accumulation.

Wishful Thinking is not Helpful
Most of us can talk ourselves into keeping anything – right? How many times have you thought “Oh, I might wear that if I was invited to a costume party.” Or, “This will be perfect if someone ever needs a (fill in the blank with whatever random items you’re thinking about),” or “I will read those 325 books when I retire”. At times, we can spend considerable time struggling to let go of an item that has no practical use because we just know it will come in handy down the road. If you are spending more than 3-5 seconds figuring out what to do with a particular item, it may be time to say farewell to that item. And yes, this includes cute office supplies, extra sheets and towels and more. Instead of feeling like you’re throwing it away, reframe the thought into knowing that when the item is donated or sold, someone else can enjoy it and you’ll have additional space in your home to enjoy. And always remember my favorite motto – When in doubt, leave it out. And of course my other favorite, Less is More.
