Is Less Really More?

Accumulating stuff is something that happens without any effort. Saying “Yes” to the friend or relative who offers you a “cute top” or a “great container” or an “expensive piece of furniture” can happen in a split second and it’s hard to say no.

We’re not saying it’s not ok to accept lovely things from people we know. We are saying that before you automatically say “yes” to a new item, pause for a moment or two (or even 24 hours) and make sure that you have room for this item and secondly, think about the amount of time it will take to process and fit this new item into your life. Will it require getting rid of something else and what will the cost be to do that? Is this worth your time and energy when perhaps both might be better spent on a nagging ‘to do’ task that’s been patiently waiting for your attention?

The less you have, the more space you’ll have to think and create. You’ll have less to dust and clean. You’ll have less to straighten up in the morning or evening. On the other side, you’ll have more time to relax, more time to do hobbies, more time to just hang out and do nothing. Having more doesn’t guarantee happiness, but it can increase stress levels.

Consider the mantra “Less is More” the next time you’re tempted to get “just one more thing.”
