Now or Never?
October 2023
The meaning of “Now Or Never” – When you have to do something right now because you may not get another chance to do it.
Can that really apply to decluttering, downsizing and organizing?
The “Now or Never” Mindset
There’s a kind of excitement when one is at the point of saying “Now or Never” – it could be whether or not to dive into a pool, it could be making an extravagant purchase or going on a terrifying amusement park ride…but can it apply to getting your home in order??
I say yes!
By creating a “Now or Never” mindset when it comes to decluttering, you are taking back control of your home and life by taking action now. Action of any kind – from recycling some old magazines or newspapers to donating clothes you don’t wear – can motivate you to keep going. Overwhelm can lift once you get going. If you need help to get going, ask for it and if you need someone to be your accountability partner, try not to overthink and just ask a friend, neighbor, family member or me? You can always write it on your calendar like an appointment (but with yourself).
I would bet that you will not regret decluttering now instead of later – in fact, you may be so proud of yourself that you do it again the next day.
Here are some quick suggestions on what you can do NOW (verses later which sometimes means never):
Get rid of socks and underwear you don’t wear anymore
Pick out a few PJs that you like best and donate the rest
Toss old junk mail
Return item to store so you can get refund before it’s too late.
Repair or take for repair, a broken/loved item
Make a phone call that you’ve been avoiding
Schedule a donation pick up with Greendrop or Vietnam Vets or make a trip to a donation site.
Cancel a subscription or auto-order that you no longer want.
Take a walk, ride or have a seat outside.
Schedule something fun to do
Pack up dishes that you will never use and donate them.
Sort through a pile of photos and toss the ones that are duplicates or poor quality.
Tell someone what you want to accomplish this week (or even today) and then do it.
Try getting an extra hour of sleep.
Pick ONE thing you’ve been avoiding and do it today.
Of course these items don’t apply to everyone, but I hope the message is delivered – if you take action, you will feel better. Action in any form and for any amount of time counts! Happy Decluttering NOW!
